It may be easier to make the Kimono Style dress and the hospital could use it for boys or girls.
But, as a mother who has lost 2 baby boys, I really appreciate them being dressed as a little boy.
Since Nicholas was bigger (3 lbs 10 oz) the hospital has some clothes that were big on him, but they worked.
Moroni was a tiny guy! Only 4 1/2 oz. It was very special to me that the hospital had a white, suit-like outfit for him to wear. I really like the addition of the vest. (He was tall and skinny, so this outfit was wide on him. Just to give you an idea of his size, he only filled about half of it... if that makes sense.)
Another important part of the outfit is the wide open back. Which makes it much easier for the nurse to dress the baby. It was tied with a ribbon to close it at the top, but I would imagine that might have been difficult for the nurse to tie. I am working on my pattern to follow this design, but I think I will make them with "iron on velcro" instead of a ribbon.
I think other colors would be appropriate as well, but I prefer the white.
